Plastek UK Ltd Christmas Raffle benefits local Hospice & Help for Heroes Charities

For most of us Christmas is a time of year for celebrating with family and bringing in good cheer! Imagine then how difficult the festive period is for those people, and their families who are spending Christmas giving or receiving palliative care.

The festive season is equally difficult for those who have lost loved ones in active duty in Great Britain’s Armed Forces ,or are caring for injured servicemen and women following a tour of duty.

Plastek UK Ltd in Mansfield decided that they wanted to share their Christmas celebrations in the wider community in the most helpful way possible. To this end, a Plastek Christmas Raffle was organised in conjunction with Christmas Jumper day, and with refreshments for all employees at the Crown Farm Way site in Mansfield. The chosen beneficiaries of the raffle chosen were The John Eastwood Hospice, and Help for Heroes Charities.

The John Eastwood Hospice in Mansfield provides services for patients with advanced cancer and other conditions which need specialist palliative care. Approximately 280 voluntary staff work in several different areas of the Hospice, providing services which would not otherwise be available. In order for such fantastic care to be offered, the hospice needs to raise as much money as possible to meet its many commitments.

Help the Heroes mission is to deliver an enduring national network of support for our Armed Forces’ wounded and their families. It was founded in 2007 to provide direct, practical support fir wounded, injured and sick veterans, servicemen and their families. Regular donations can help to provide a sustained focus on improving the lives of the wounded.

Plastek UK itself donated two additional staff holiday, as well as some cash prizes.

The raffle tickets, which were sold exclusively to Plastek staff, made a grand total of GBP 500.00 for the John Eastwood Hospice, and Plastek were delighted to present the cheque to the Hospice Trust Manager.

Plastek Presses on with Expansion

Posted on January 21, 2015 by PeterW

Within the current global economic climate many manufacturers are finding the going increasingly tough but those companies that have been able to build strong relationships with their customers are continuing to thrive. Mansfield-based Plastek UK Ltd (Europe) is one such company.

To further Plastek UK’s major success in the injection moulding industry, it is putting the finishing touches to a £2 million pound expansion of its facilities in its European Headquarters in North Nottinghamshire.

Plastek UK Ltd is securing its future growth plans by embarking on a strategically phased expansion plan in line with being awarded major new business.

Phase one of the expansion at its Mansfield site is due to be completed by the end of January 2015, and has culminated in adding a further 860m2 of manufacturing space to its already impressive state of the art factory. The extension to the factory floor will house a further 8 moulding machines.

In order to strengthen Plastek’s expertise in supplying packaging products for the Food & Beverage, Pharmaceutical Packaging and Personal Care markets, and to underline its commitment to ISO 22000 + PAS 223 Plastek is also creating a brand new clean room environment in this area. Plastek has won major new projects within the aforementioned markets, and the investment in the expansion is a direct result of this success.

Plastek and its contracted partners have carried out all of the works on track within a very tight schedule, and have taken advantage of the annual seasonal shutdown period for carrying out major works such as the installation of new isolation valves for the mould shop water system. This has meant minimal disruption to ongoing production.

Additionally Plastek has created a new Tool Room and Maintenance workshop, as well as a new loading/unloading area for machinery at the rear of the facility.

“I am delighted with the progress of the first phase, and every person involved has worked tirelessly to ensure that all of the projects have completed on time and to the highest standards,” Mick Shaw – General Manager comments. “The expansion at Plastek UK underlines our commitment to our customers, and shows the strength of Plastek UK as a major player in the packaging arena. I want to extend special thanks to all of our Plastek personnel for their hard work through this period, as well as to all of our contracted partners.” He adds, “This is just the beginning of the expansion programme for Plastek, and we already have plans in place to increase our presence further in the future.”

Darren Warboy – Engineering and Service Manager, who has headed up the expansion project, said, “It is gratifying to see the culmination of all the months of hard work and planning coming to fruition. This expansion has incorporated state of the art technology in all areas so that the factory will continue to run as efficiently as possible and keep up with the exacting demands of our customers’ products.”

Plastek UK continues to be strong overall and will continue to invest in new equipment and infrastructure and is actively looking at new business acquisitions within Europe. Ultimately Plastek has further expansion plans at the European HQ site to double the manufacturing floor.

Plastek UK Ltd was established in 1999, and is a division of the US-based Plastek Group, a renowned world-class manufacturer in the plastic packaging industry. Headquartered in Erie, Pennsylvania, the group is a privately held company owned by the Prischak family specialising in tool making and moulding of rigid plastic packaging for global retail brands. Established in 1956 it now has sites in North America, Latin America and Europe.

Further Expansion at Plastek

Posted on September 30, 2013 by PeterW

As part of the company’s continued expansion, Plastek UK has made a significant investment in three new injection moulding machines, bringing the total on the shop floor to forty-one.

Plastek’s clients include the owners of some of the world’s most famous brands, and this latest expansion is a direct response to the winning of new business in this area. Indeed, expansion has been a continuous trend at Plastek UK. The company has trebled its production capacity since 1999, with no less than 8 new machines being installed since 2010.

“Our teams have now installed all three of the new Ferromatik machines,” said General Manager Mick Shaw, “a K-Tec 320, K-Tec 450 and the excellent K-Tec 200/2FETW machine which features the latest stack turning cube mould technology."

“With four core sides which can be turned in less than a second this particular machine allows us to increase production capacity as there are twice as many cavities in the mould. It also allows us to use moulding machines with half the clamping force to produce the same quantity of parts – the advantages being lower capital costs, parts costs and cycle times. This is exactly the sort of process innovation our customers are looking for, and represents both a huge leap forward in injection moulding technology, and a significant new step in Plastek’s long-standing and very successful partnership with Ferromatik Milacron, which goes right back to 1999.”

Sure Route to Success for Plastek

Posted on July 5, 2013 by PeterW

Plastek UK has announced the successful culmination of a three year project with clients Unilever to create a radically different new actuator for their Sure brand of men’s deodorants.

This truly global project, initiated by Unilever in 2010, will soon see a radical new design of actuator on the popular range of Sure aerosol deodorants. Aiming to develop a solution which incorporated class-leading new functionality and stylish good looks with direct appeal to a masculine aesthetic, Unilever chose to work with the legendary Italian design gurus at Pininfarina. When it came to manufacturing and assembling the complex, five-component design, however, Unilever were confident in the skills of long-term manufacturing partners Plastek Group to join the development team.

Plastek UK has been involved throughout the last three years of product and tool development and redesign, but has played its key role in implementing the means by which the five individual components could be manufactured and assembled to the high quality requirements and exacting timescale of the total project. This has meant a significant investment by Plastek in new injection moulding machines from Ferromatik, including one with a turntable for cube technology to handle the most advanced high cavitation moulds.

Plastek has also installed highly advanced CMM measuring machinery, and high speed automated assembly equipment incorporating automatic camera-controlled quality inspection.

“This type of project is hugely demanding in terms of expertise, experience and scrupulous planning,” said Plastek UK General Manager Mick Shaw. “Yes, there has been a great investment in new equipment, but that would be worth nothing without the development of the measurement and standardisation protocols which allow our teams to produce these complex components to the required levels of accuracy in a completely consistent manner. That’s where the project succeeds or fails."

“The two high speed assembly units will be producing multiple millions of actuators every month and the importance of this project to Unilever is mirrored by the enormous effort that has been made within Plastek UK to ensure a trouble-free implementation. Accordingly, we have been able to relocate existing machinery and deploy the new facilities without any interruption of supplies to other clients, and the new manufacturing cell employs sophisticated new material feeding systems from Colortronic and Motan, the latest two-shot cube moulding technology, and conveyor feeding of moulded parts to assembly to minimise labour and provide assured quality control. We’ve been delighted to carry out complex projects for our partners at Unilever on several occasions, but this has been one of the most involved and all-encompassing, and we are delighted to have pulled it off so successfully.”

The new actuators are now in full production and, besides the valuable on-shelf presence of their eye-catching good looks, feature a soft-touch, anti-slip button and a unique locking mechanism.

Latest UK Expansion Completed

Posted on September 10, 2012 by Plastek

Plastek UK has invested in a new manufacturing cell to double its capacity in order to meet the needs of a major customer.

An important feature of Plastek’s latest expansion of its Nottinghamshire plant has been the automation of product handling.

The extension to the system also features an HMI touch screen control unit. This allows components from eight injection moulding machines to be transferred to any of the fully automatic assembly and packaging machines, without any manual involvement.

Reject belt conveyors operate via the machine SPC control to ensure only quality-compliant product is then transported, via swan neck belt conveyors, to high level conveyors, thus minimising the floor area occupied. Product then passes through a fire wall to assembly or filling lines.

Chemical Foaming Innovation Promises Valuable Savings

Posted on September 10, 2012 by Plastek

Plastek has been working with major global brands to reduce costs and improve environmental performance.

The latest chemical foaming technology has been deployed by Plastek in a joint project with a key customer to reduce the cost and environmental impact of deodorant stick packaging.

The process uses chemical foaming agents to produce tiny air bubbles within the plastic packaging without altering its function or appearance and this successful project was the first of its kind within the FMCG sector.

Besides delivering a competitive advantage to the customer by reducing packaging weight by 3-10% over a range of packs, the project will go on to remove 1000 tons of polymer from the waste stream and cut carbon emissions by a further 3000 tons.

A representative from the client company said, “This pioneering innovation proves Plastek’s capabilities to deliver technically challenging initiatives and helps to secure a long term relationship with our brands.”

Going the Extra 600 Miles

Posted on September 10, 2012 by Plastek

Good suppliers should expect to go the extra mile for an important client, but Plastek went a great many steps further!

As part of a huge project to explore ways of maximising shared business value with a long-term customer, Plastek USA and its client looked at ways of optimising the overall supply network. In a remarkable move, Plastek proposed that the best way to service the client’s requirements now and in the future would be to transfer a large part of its operation from Plastek’s home town of Erie, PA, 600 miles across county to be located close to the clients’ plant.

The transfer could have been a logistical nightmare, but great care was taken to ensure a smooth transition. An existing moulding plant was purchased and over a period of just a few weeks, machinery was transported and re-commissioned so that production could begin again in record time. The result?… reduced lead times, reduced transportation distances and costs, improved call-off times and a reduction in CO2 emissions of 2000 tons per year.

The client – a multi-national giant – commented that Plastek is, “an outstanding business partner with an mind set of continuous improvement…willing to engineer all aspects of their organisation to meet our needs”. The integrated approach to customer / supplier partnerships has delivered significant top and bottom growth for both companies.
